The Course
Opened in 1992, Joyenval is an exceptional private Club designed by Robert Trent Jones. The famous architect took advantage of a remarkable historical site to envision two championship courses, Marly and Retz. Varied and accessible, they present all the characteristics of a Trent Jones course: The fairways are wide, but the greens, rolling and undulating, are protected by numerous bunkers. A bogey is attainable, the par much less so.
Marly revolves around the Club House and its historic dependencies. It is a Par 72 of 6,177 meters. It is by playing it that one becomes aware of the exceptional nature of the place: The double green of the 6th and 17th measures 2,500m² and can impose a putt of 50m. The 11th, a formidable Par 3 downhill, offers a view of the dependencies of the old Joyenval abbey. Upon reaching the 12th, a short Par 4 with a diabolical green, one lingers over the centuries-old ruins of the gardens of the Joyenval abbey (1224). The last hole, a Par 5 uphill, is symbolic of the place: the brick Club House in the background, its 10 bunkers surrounded by tall grass, and the double-tiered green offer a final challenge to the golfer.
